Oceanus Seminar Series

CIIMAR’s Oceanus Seminar with Joana Xavier | Boca da Baleia – CIIMAR

TwinDEEPS – enhancing CIIMAR’s capacity for deep-sea exploration and observation

The deep ocean, that comprises 98% of Portugal’s EEZ, is a vast area with great relevance for the country’s National Ocean Strategy. The EU-funded TwinDEEPS project aims to raise CIIMAR’s R&I capacity in the field of deep-ocean exploration and observation, by linking it with top-class European research partners (IMR, Norway; NIOZ, Netherlands; AWI, Germany). Through transfer of knowledge, and tailored advanced training activities (e.g. training-at-sea, scientific workshops, leadership courses), TwinDEEPS will build a generation of highly qualified deep-sea researchers, at all career stages, enhancing the research profile and attractiveness of CIIMAR. In this seminar, an overview of the project, and the ways that the CIIMAR community can participate and benefit from it, will be provided.

Joana Xavier, PhD

Joana Xavier is the coordinator of the Deep-Sea Biodiversity and Conservation Team at CIIMAR, and the TwinDEEPS project coordinator. Her research focuses on the understanding of basin-scale diversity, biogeography, and connectivity patterns of deep-sea species and habitats such as sponge grounds and coral gardens, using a combination of disciplines. She also strives to advance the science-policy-society interface, developing tools and exchanging knowledge to support the implementation of international agreements and instruments established to ensure sustainable management and conservation of deep-sea vulnerable marine ecosystems.
