The Transnational Project SULIEIA, funded by the PNRR (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza), plays a pivotal role in enhancing the internationalization of Italian universities through innovation, digital transformation, and environmental sustainability. By bringing together students, universities, and experts from diverse regions, the initiative facilitates the exchange of knowledge, especially around pressing issues like climate change and environmental degradation.
The inclusion of photography as a tool for communicating science is particularly compelling. Within the SULIEIA Project, a photographic documentation has been included, carried out by the photojournalist Salvatore Esposito through a long-term reportage “Mediterraneo” that documents climate change in the Mediterranean area and its impact on “Human being”. Also within the framework of the Sulieia Project, a service has been activated for students The “School Photography in Research,” in collaboration with the University of Tunis El Manar, is a prime example of how creativity and scientific inquiry can intersect and how Photographers and Academics can work together.
Photography becomes a visual language through which students engage with and communicate critical topics like climate change, offering them an opportunity to explore the scientific, emotional, and human dimensions of these global challenges. Through both theoretical training and practical fieldwork, participants were empowered to think critically and creatively about the role of visuals in scientific communication. The school provided students a platform to express their perspectives on how environmental changes are affecting lives globally.
It reinforced the project’s core objective of fostering international collaboration, as the competition transcended borders and brought diverse viewpoints together to highlight a shared global concern. This international approach not only nurtures academic and professional development but also promotes global awareness and collaboration in tackling climate change and sustainability. Through initiatives like this, students gain the necessary tools to contribute meaningfully to the digital and green transitions while also enriching their understanding of the interconnectedness of people, environments, and societies across the world.
