Hydrobiology

The Hydrobiology Team was established in 1983 within the framework of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, and later joined CIIMAR upon its foundation. Its activities include research, consulting, and outreach.

The laboratory develops its research on the ecology and conservation of aquatic systems under the scope of the One Health approach, focusing on three main areas: i) water quality, estuarine and coastal dynamics, covering a multitude of aspects such as physico-chemical, biological (plankton) and microbiological characteristics, nutrient pollution, greenhouse gases emissions; ii) assessment and ecology of microbial emergent pollutants, such as vibrio, aeromonas, and antibiotic resistant bacteria, among other microorganisms with seafood safety and public health concern; iii) public health, iodine deficiency, and assessment of waterborne diseases in Africa, dealing with environmental and water related problems under the present catastrophic climate changes. The Hydrobiology lab is also involved, in cooperation with other institutions, in the development of new, greener, analytical methods, including paper-based ones, for the onsite detection of key chemical and microbiological parameters for environmental and clinical applications.

Graduate in Aquatic Sciences (ICBAS-UP, 2007), MSc in Marine Biology and Ecology (ICBAS-UP, 2011), invited assistant professor at University of Porto, Ana Machado has more than 15 years experience in the field of Environmental Microbial Ecology. Her main research interests focus on environmental microbiology with relevance for water quality, bacteria dynamics and microbial antibiotic resistance transmission, and its association with public health. She has been involved in multiple (17) regional, national and international projects, being member of the PI research team in 2 projects. Published 39 scientific papers in international journals and presented over 50 communications in scientific meetings.

Catarina Teixeira is a post-doctoral researcher at CIIMAR. She is a graduate in Aquatic Sciences (ICBAS-UP, 2000), with a MSc degree in Environmental Engineering in 2006 (FEUP), and PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2012 (ICBAS-UP). Her main research interests focus on nutrient pollution in aquatic systems, and on the ecology of N-cycle bacteria, and their application to wastewater treatment systems. She is the author of 30 scientific papers published in international journals, and over 40 oral and poster communications in scientific meetings. She participated in 16 research projects, and has collaborated with different academic institutions as an invited teacher, and as student supervisor.

Hugo Ribeiro obtained in 2013 a Biomedical Sciences PhD degree from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of University of Porto. He is a researcher at CIIMAR, with participation in several research projects, such as Coral, SpilLess, MarinEye, Nitrotox, Nitrosul, Phytobio and Raceways. Currently, his main research interests focus on the microbial ecology related to the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbon compounds, more specifically the interactions with N Cycle processes. Hugo is the author of 12 scientific papers published in international journals.

Paula Salgado is a marine biologist whose major interests are Biological Oceanography, Microbial Ecology and Biogeochemistry. She has done previous research on the regulation of planktonic communities in a coastal lagoon system and is currently studying the dynamics between the marine nitrogen and sulfur biogeochemical cycles from a molecular and ecological standpoint.
